Singer and Tabloid Target Amy Winehouse Passes Away at Age 27

23 Jul

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse, age 27, was found dead today at her London loft.

Many are saddened by the loss of a young talent, however, there aren’t many people out there who are surprised.

Other celebrities have taken to social media to express their condolences and sadness.

“Not a surprise. SO sad, another loss to addiction. A reminder this is often fatal. Recovery is possible, but sadly not for Amy Winehouse.” – Dr. Drew

“I can’t even breathe right now I’m crying so hard I just lost 1 of my best friends. I love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!” – Kelly Osborne

“I nevr know wht 2 post after paying respect 2 sum1 who died. Just seems lk anything funny is inappropriate. mayB I’ll just go C Harry Potter.” – Ashton Kutcher

“I am genuinely heartbroken about this #DearAmy.” – Rihanna

“Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Kurt Cobain and now Amy Winehouse: all died at 27.” – Richard Roeper

“not surprise but super sad to hear about the news. RIP. Never take life for granted.” – Pete Wentz

“Amy Winehouse lived longer than I expected. Is that awful of me? I’m sorry, Amy #RIP.” – Kevin Williamson

“My heart goes out 2 Amy Winehouse’s family, loved ones. Praying for their strength during this time.” – Janelle Monae

“Singer Amy Winehouse found dead at her home in London, DAMN!!! RIP.” – Jermaine Dupri

“After our show in serbia I wish I’d been able to help amy. I knew this would come, I’m sorry,” – Moby

As troubled as she was – drugs, drinking, violence, and a life of disarray – her talent was undeniable.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “Authorities are investigating the cause of the British singer’s death. But, sadly, it was a surprise to virtually no one. Winehouse had been waging a very public struggle with substance abuse since her teens, and after the huge success of her 2006 breakthrough album, Back to Black, her erratic behavior devolved even further, effectively putting her career on hold.” Her death is suspected to be an overdose – whether accidental or suicide remains to be seen but the Hollywood rumor mills are suspecting that it was likely intentional.

Now, the world will never see what could have been.

I hope that news of her passing will serve as a wake-up call to other troubled starlets out there… the  eerie”27 Club” does not need anymore new members! May she rest in peace.

Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows Part 2 – REVIEW

15 Jul

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the midnight premiere of the final installment of the Harry Potter movie series, the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

We saw it in 3D, in the VIP section, and so, it was bound to be good, regardless. But – as a “Potter” virgin (yes, I’ve NEVER read the books or seen the other films!) I didn’t know just what to expect.

To my (pleasant) surprise, I enjoyed the film! It was action-packed and entertaining, and I knew enough about the franchise to be able to understand the plot and catch on to what was going on. So, even being a newbie, this is a movie that, if you like movies, you’ll enjoy.

Definitely of “blockbuster” caliber (I mean, it SHATTERED midnight box office records!) this is a must-see for the whole family. It made me want to go back and watch the other films, too. The crowd was great, many donning costumes and/or decked out head-to-toe in Harry Potter gear — and I am sure that it was a bittersweet experience for these loyal fans.

But, even for “bandwagon” fans like myself, it was a great experience. The movie was playing on multiple screens and was completely sold out. I never thought at 2:35am that I’d be stuck in “Harry Potter traffic” — but, alas, I was.  The movie garnered $32 million in advance ticket sales alone, all-in-all grossing a whopping $43.5 million last night — an astonishing new record.

I’d say that it is definitely worth checking out; and the 3-D experience on this one added to the fun.

Enjoy — let me know if you “get your Potter on” this weekend, and what you think of the flick!

Raise the Jolly Roger! Pittsburgh Pirates – Winning!

9 Jul

In the words of Charlie Sheen – “Winning!”

… That’s what the Buccos have been doing! Raise the Jolly Roger – the Pittsburgh Pirates are making Da’ Burgh believe again!

We haven’t had a winning season since 1992, but this year it looks as though the Pirates are out to prove that they aren’t the joke of MLB, as they’ve been portrayed as in recent years.

They’ve been playing in front of sell-out crowds at the gorgeous PNC Park….playing, and actually winning quite a few!

Last night, the Bucs won 7-4 with an exciting 3-run homer by Michael McKenry that had the entire crowd up on their feet. Many Pittsburghers stated that they didn’t know the last time that fans just erupted in cheers over one hit. The excitement around town was tangible, and Twitter was lit up with joyful “Let’s Go Bucs!” tweets.

They play the Cubs again tonight at PNC Park, 7:05pm. You can see McKenry’s hit here: http://mlb.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=pit

The Pirates are currently 2nd in the National League Central.

As ESPN put it, “The Pirates would be a good bandwagon to jump on right now.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Pittsburgh Steelers MVP & DWTS Champ Hines Ward Busted for DUI

9 Jul

He’s a talented athlete who is known for his gregarious smile and his effortless charm. However, today, Pittsburgh Steelers’ Hines Ward has nothing to smile about.

Earlier in the year, he was handcuffed for a “misunderstanding” in Los Angeles while filming Dancing with the Stars (which he subsequently went on to win.)

But this time, the handcuffs were no mistake. Hines Ward was arrested early this morning in Georgia on DUI charges.

The Steelers receiver and Super Bowl MVP has been largely known as one of the most well-respected players in the NFL, but this drunk-driving charge may tarnish that image.

Ward was arrested in Dekalb County, Georgia, and held on $1,000 bond, posting shortly after the arrest and being thereafter released.

Gossip site TMZ was among the first to break the news. Ward grew up in Georgia and went to school there. Some sports pundits are speculating whether or not the NFL Lockout is giving players too much free time.

Ward is expected to release a statement this afternoon.

The mugshot photo is below. This incident unfortunately comes on the heels of a popular tabloid magazine (on stands now) boasting “Who’s Gay, Who’s Not” with Ward featured as one of the celebrities on the cover. This just isn’t his week.

Pittsburgh’s Joe Manganiello Returns to TRUE BLOOD this Sunday!

8 Jul

The wait is over. True Blood’s (hottest) resident Werewolf, Alcide, returns to HBO’s True Blood this Sunday.

Alcide is played by actor Joe Manganiello, and was a new addition to the supernatural series last season. Manganiello is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – specifically, Mt. Lebanon.

He has appeared in not only the wildly popular True Blood, but also the Spider Man movies, as well as TV shows How I Met Your Mother, and One Tree Hill.

Fans are pushing for an Alcide-Sookie hookup, but, according to True Blood producers, don’t count on it any time soon. Catch Manganiello in action this Sunday on HBO at 9pm.
