A Record-Breaker: The Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh GREAT RACE

26 Sep

Today’s “Great Race” of Pittsburgh – held in honor of the late mayor Richard S. Caliguiri and benefitting amyloidosis research, has broken a record…before the race even began!

The 32nd annual City of Pittsburgh Great Race is “sold out” – reaching a record number of 14,000 participants for today’s run.

The race features a 10K run, a 5K run, and a 5K walk, and is sponsored by Highmark, Dollar Bank, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Allegheny General Hospital, DelMonte, KDKA, the Pittsburgh CW, Pittsburgh Magazine, the Port Authority, Bob FM, Q 92.9, and the Allegheny Regional Asset District – a.k.a. RAD.

The Great Race is making efforts to “go greener” this year. According to the official website, “The Great Race is partnering with the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) and the City’s Recycling Division to expand the event’s green initiative.

This year The Great Race is seeking local certification through Zero Waste Pittsburgh (a project of PRC) and national certification through the Council for Responsible Sport in recognition of its environmental efforts. Look for recycling and composting containers along the course route and at Point State Park.”

Participants can check out their scores and standings online after the race. Results will be announced at http://www.rungreatrace.com/results.htm the afternoon of September 26th, 2010. Prizes include trophies and plaques. The Richard S. Caliguiri Award is given to the first male and female Pittsburgh resident to finish the 10K race….and, they have to be true ‘Burghers,as the winner has to be a resident for at least 6 months prior to the race.

ANYONE can join in – there are special awards given to those in the wheelchair race, and for “juniors” – the kids who are participating.

I’ll be there supporting my fiance…….go Mike! Maybe next year, my knee will let me participate 🙂

Good luck to all of the participants – and kudos to all of you!
