Glitzburgh at the Carnegie Museum -> Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art: A Benefit for the Persad Center

12 May

On Monday, May 10th, the Persad Center of Pittsburgh hosted their annual art benefit “Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art” at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland.

This event featured 200+ local, regional, and even international artists, live and silent auctions, and fabulous hors d’oeuvres and appetizers. Dinner was buffet-style and included delicious gourmet food ranging from from local restaurants and bistros to chains such as PF Chang’s.

The crowd was ever-diverse and included businessmen, doctors, philanthropists, art students, drag queens, the transgendered, bisexual, lesbian, gay community, art collectors, devoted volunteers, bloggers, media, and the local avant garde circle. There literally was something for everyone – food, art, and beverages for every taste! Guests could enjoy wine, whiskey, soda, or lattes, and could munch on ravioli, salad, rice, or salmon rolls. The art ranged from Andy Warhol-esque paintings like the “Mums” print to glass-blown vases and still-life photography. There were tastefully done nudes, a plant-woman, a brass marionette, and many abstract pieces. There were pastoral works, watercolors, and nautical-themed works, ethnic and tribal pieces, and other works with more of a pop art flair.

Glitz and glam melded with class and culture, and every intersection was met with grace and poise. This was an event free of judgement and full of welcoming, and hope. It truly was an evening of celebrating art, and celebrating life. I hope to be able to attend next year, and I hope that the Persad Center was able to raise lots of money this year for their wonderful cause.

Thank you to the Persad Center and the Carnegie Museum of Art for a lovely evening….and especially to Kristen Hawley, who, I looked for all night, but, was unable to connect with! (A testament to the vast number of guests and the large crowd that this esteemed event drew! Kudos!)

Cheers to a successful evening!

Celebrate Art, Celebrate Life! Persad Center Patron Party and Art Auction

20 Apr

Pittsburgh, do you know about the Persad Center?

The Persad Center is our nation’s 2nd oldest licensed counseling center for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community, and Pittsburgh is lucky enough to have them right here in our community.

Aside from the cause that they support, they host wonderful events in Pittsburgh for the entire community to enjoy!

If you’re an art lover, you surely won’t want to miss their initiative, Celebrate Art, Celebrate Life!

This past Saturday, April 17th, the Persad Center hosted the Patron Party at the brand-new August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. The Patron Party, was a reception for approximately 500 artists and special contributors. Sponsors and special guests were lucky enough to be able to preview  a selection of artwork and enjoy dinner and cocktails at this distinctive event.  This event attracted a diverse crowd including business and community leaders, regional artists, and professionals of all ages. The Persad Center hopes that the May 10th  “Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art” 2010 Auction and Benefit will do the same.

Stay tuned to learn more about the May event – for now, enjoy photos from the Persad Patron Party, here:
