Happy 24th Birthday, Lady GaGa! See you in Pittsburgh, September 5th!

27 Mar

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LADY GAGA!

Lady Gaga turns 24 on Sunday, March 28th. Here’s wishing her an (early) Happy Birthday!!

She already got an amazing birthday gift: Gaga broke Internet records this week when 3 of her videos boasted a whopping 1 billion video views EACH. (“Just Dance”, “Pokerface”, and “Bad Romance.”)

Her most recent video, “Telephone” featuring Beyonce is one of the most talked-about music videos in quite some time, with its 9-minute length, bad-girl feel, fabulously absurd fashions, and her nods to director Quentin Tarantino. With a Grammy and multiple other accolades and nominations under her belt, as well as becoming a larger-than-life force to be reckoned with, this hasn’t exactly been a bad year for Lady Gaga. (Aside from hermaphrodite rumors and a $30 million lawsuit filed against her by her ex-boyfriend) After all, she got to meet the Queen of England, perform with Elton John at the Grammy Awards, became Creative Director for Polaroid, designed Heartbeats headphones with Dr. Dre, and has become a gay-rights advocate, a fashion muse, and beloved international icon.

In my opinion, she is IT. The whole package. She’ll soon be the new reigning queen of pop – and this comes from a DIEHARD Britney Spears fan. Gaga, though, has something different. She’s a whole new animal, and if she doesn’t boot Britney from her role as THE pop star, she’ll at least share the throne with her. Intelligent, avant garde, artsy, fashion-forward, and certainly not shy, Lady Gaga is surely a super star. Girlfriend can SING! She’s classically trained on the piano, she writes many of her own songs, is close with her parents, started from the bottom performing and bars and burlesque shows, and one standout difference from other current divas is that she rarely if ever lip-synchs to even part of a performance.

Her shows and costumes are spectacles to be beheld, and I hear that her current tour resembles more of a musical than simply a concert. I do worry that she may burn out. OK! Magazine reports this week that Gaga collapsed twice in a mid-March shows in New Zealand (see video here) and that she’s overworked and that she is allegedly suffering severe exhaustion. Gaga did confirm her collapse onstage to a UK radio station and says that she was simply hot, tired, and working too hard at the time. She claims that her family “keeps her sane” and so I hope that, despite her absolutely grueling concert, business, design, promotion, and recording schedule, that she gets the rest and support that she needs.

Gaga, who is working on a 3rd album due out this year and claims it is some of her best work yet (how do you top THE BEST?) is planning on “going to the nearest bar….and getting very drunk” for her birthday this weekend, as she celebrates the age of 24 – no doubt with BFF Perez Hilton, her Little Monsters, and Haus of Gaga family in tow.

Below is a photo that Lady Gaga posted on her Twitter page to commemorate her 24th Birthday …. in her Birthday Suit, of course:

PSSSST…. Mark your Calendars! Lady Gaga’s “The Monster Ball” will be the opening concert at the new Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Sunday, September 5th, 2010. Official ticket sale dates have not yet been confirmed. Stay tuned for breaking news on Gagaloo!

Shower with the Soap Stars – For a Great Cause!

27 Mar

With everything else going on this weekend, I’m bound to miss out on a great event or two…..today is the “Shower with the Soap Stars.”

The event begins at Noon today, March 27th, 2010 at the LaMont Restaurant on Mt. Washington. Tickets are $60 and benefit the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. (Again, another event I’d have loved to attended this weekend, save for the bum knee!)

There will be a luncheon, games and raffles, and the chance for you to mingle with your favorite soap stars – all in the name of a good cause.

Sponsored by the CW, The Young Women’s Breast Cancer Foundation, the LaMont, and the Cancer Caring Center, it is sure to be a fabulous event filled with fabulous soap opera stars and high-profile local attendees.

Spend the afternoon at a “shower” with actors from the Guiding Light, One Life to Live, As the World Turns, and Days of Our Lives, all at the LaMont on Mt. Washington – which offers the BEST view of our world-renowned Pittsburgh city skyline. Enjoy the view, and enjoy the day!

What’s the Haps this Weekend? – From Playboy and Warhol to Carmen and the Women’s Expo

26 Mar

“There’s nothing to do.”

Wrong!

There is…and if you look hard enough, there ALWAYS is.

I personally will be out of commission this weekend due to surgery. However, I encourage all of you to go have some fun on my behalf. While there are plenty more events going on (and many useful online event calendars to prove it) I’ve selected a few unique ones that I think are pretty swell and worth mentioning.

1) The Playboy Pajama Party at the Andy Warhol Museum: “Join the Warhol Museum in celebrating their four new eye-opening exhibitions in true Playboy style…pajamas encouraged.”  Visit http://www.warhol.org for details. This event is Saturday, March 27, 2010.

2) The final showings of the beloved opera, Carmen, are this Friday and Saturday. We have such rich arts right here in the ‘Burgh – why not take advantage of it? Visit http://www.pittsburghopera.org for details.

3) The Women’s Expo in Greensburg – Join hundreds of women at the Sheraton in Greensburg this Saturday, March 27th, for a day of entertainment, education, and exhibits to enhance lives of women all across the region. 10am-1pm at the Four Points in Sheraton, Greensburg, PA.

4) Pittsburgh Wine Festival Presents “Wine from Down Under” – Attend a wine tasting at The Sewickley Cafe, thisSunday, March 28th, from 4:45pm-7:00pm. Good times!

5) the 4th Annual “Goin’ to the Dogs Beef & Bone Dinner” in Slippery Rock. This fundraiser benefits dog rescues in the area. It begins at 5:30pm and will be held at North Country Brewing.

As I said, there are many more.

BTW ~~ Did anyone catch the Train concert tonight at Carnegie Music Hall?

How was it?
