Tweeting with Oprah

22 Oct

As some of you know, I do health and advocacy work as well as my Glitzburgh blog.
Last week, I had an amazing surprise when one of my heroes, Oprah Winfrey herself, sent me a tweet.

The fact that the Big O took the time to read my bio and then tweet me about it? Amazing.

I would like to share….

Check it out – the 4th one down to @ArthritisAshley (one of my many other twitter accounts besides @Glitzburgh!)

Oprah said, “I read ur bio. U r a survivor and now in the the healing business. Allowing others to “emerge” from their pain.” You can see the original tweet, here.

I can’t technically write a blog about my Oprah Show experience – it’s a legal thing.

I will write this blog post, though, to tell you all to tune in tomorrow, Thurs May 5, 2011, to watch the show that I attended. I got to sit 2nd row at Oprah’s Last Harpo Hookups Show which is one of her final 16 shows….ever.

All I can say is that it was amazing! Thanks, Oprah!

Your Time Is Now – Attend the 2010 Pennsylvania Governor’s Conference for Women: October 14th, 2010

25 Sep

Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 14th, 2010 from 7:30am-5pm – you won’t be sorry! The Pennsylvania Commission for Women and Governor Ed Rendell are presenting the annual Pennsylvania Governor’s Conference for Women at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Join 5,000 women as they come together for this awesome event, held this year in Pittsburgh.

The conference features a multitude of esteemed keynote speakers, workshops, exhibits, and networking opportunities, and always draws a large crowd of diverse, independent, and empowered women from all walks of life. At this year’s event you can learn about building up your resume and partake in mentor match services. You can attend a career fair, learn how to build your leadership skills, and even learn how to utilize social media to build your brand!

One seminar teaches mothers how to raise happy , healthy, balanced, and joyful children in today’s world, which so often tends to dwell on negativity. Another will tell you how to take your small business from a home-based or independent company to a larger, scalable enterprise.

Come, learn about money management, negotiation skills, planning for retirement, and “reinventing your life” – it is NEVER too late to make a change! Also, make sure to sit in on “How to Take Care of Yourself While Taking Care of Others” – – something EVERY woman needs to learn about!

The Conference will also feature a session for young women – junior and senior high school girls, and, of course, the Keynote Luncheon.

There are some amazing keynote speakers at this year’s Conference. Keynote speakers at the event include Ellen Alemany, Kelly Corrigan, Eve Ensler, Jessica Herrin, Dr. Mae C. Jemison, and Tory Johnson. They all have impressive resumes and diverse backgrounds, and will surely be entertaining, interesting, and enlightening – not to mention, inspiring! Ellen Alemany is chairman and chief executive officer of Citizens Financial Group, Inc. and RBS Americas. Kelly Corrigan is the author of “The Middle Place,” a memoir about that sliver of time when childhood and parenthood overlap, which spent six months on The New York Times bestseller list. Her most recent book, “Lift,” is written in the form of a letter to her children and weaves together three true stories of adults willing to chance terrible loss in search of the joys of raising a family, and also created a video called, “Transcending.” Eve Ensler is a playwright, performer and activist. She is the award-winning author of “The Vagina Monologues,” which has been published in 45 languages and performed in more than 130 countries. Jessica Herrin is the Founder and CEO of Stella & Dot. She is also a serial entrepreneur, who previously co-founded WeddingChannel.com. She’s been recognized for her passions, skills, and accomplishments by Oprah’s O Magazine, Fortune, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, InStyle Magazine, Glamour Magazine, and more! Dr. Mae C. Jemison is founder of the technology consulting firm, The Jemison Group, Inc. that integrates the critical impact of socio-cultural issues when designing and implementing technologies. She was also the first woman of color in the WORLD to go into space, when she worked with NASA and flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Tory Johnson has worked for ABC and NBC news, and now is a consultant on Good Morning America. Oprah: The Farewell Season

10 Sep

Is anyone else feeling as distraught over saying goodbye to Oprah as I am?

I know that she’s set to launch her OWN (pardon the pun) network (yes, it is entitled, OWN – the Oprah Winfrey Network) but, to me, it just isn’t the same!

Oprah’s show is 25 years old. I’m almost 27. Do the math – Oprah has been around my entire life, and, I’ve loved the show since I was old enough to watch it!

I have to admit, as much as some people will mock me for it, Oprah is one of my idols! She is definitely a role model to me, as she should be for many women. It really is bittersweet having to “say goodbye” to her – almost like a breakup or the end of a friendship! It really is the close of an important chapter in pop culture history.

That being said, we all know that “The Big O” is not ACTUALLY going anywhere. I mean, Oprah will probably surpass Betty White in longevity. She’ll be the Brett Favre of TV – she’s not ever going to actually retire. So, I know that this “farewell season” is just farewell to THIS era of the O, and not goodbye forever.

So, a part of me is anticipating what she’ll do next, and it’s kind of exciting. Even moreso than that, I’m really anxious to see what Oprah has in store for her final season. What surprises is she going to have in store? What big names will she wow us with? I can’t imagine all the stops she’ll pull out this year.

It does make me sad that a lifelong goal of mine was to appear on the Oprah show as a guest – ok, or at the very least, to attend a taping as a member of the audience – and now, I see that this will not be happening. Bummer!

I’m still excited to see what awesomeness Queen Oprah will bring us with her 25th season.

Everybody set your DVR’s for that series recording! The farewell season starts Monday, 9.13.10…I know I’ll be watching, will you?
PS: Who do you guys think will REPLACE Oprah? Such speculation. My guess? Has to be Ellen. Thoughts?
