Phipps Conservatory Names Orchid After the Late Frank Sarris

23 May

The late Frank Sarris, known just as much locally for his philanthropy as his chocolatiering, had a “candystriper” orchid named in his honor at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh this past April.

Mr. Sarris of Canonsburg’s Sarris Candies was a trustee and benefactor of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and they not only named this hybrid candy-striped orchid (shown left) in his honor, but also dediced the Spring Flower show to him. The Phalaenopsis ‘Frank Sarris’ Orchid is a part of the Phipps Orchid Room and was bred by orchid-breeder Dick Wells at Hilltop Orchids.

Frank Sarris died at age 78 on March 2nd, 2010. Sarris Chocolates are wildly popular in Western Pennsylvania and was established in 1963 out of Frank Sarris’ basement. Today, Sarris Choclate Factory and Ice Cream Parlor fills an area the size of a football field with over 100 yards of chocolates, penny candy, ice cream and even toys. Sarris candies are popular fundraising candies and can also be found in more than 500 Hallmark stores around the country.

Sarris proclaims themselves the “world’s best chocolates” – and fittingly, orchids are the world’s most popular flowers.

Therefore, Pittsburgh’s Frank Sarris Orchid may just be a perfect creation!
