Will the Real New Jersey Please Stand Up?

10 Sep

The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Jersey Shore. Jerseylicious.

These are just a few (yes, there’s more!) of the “gotta-love-’em” trashy reality TV shows out there that are giving the Garden State a bad name.

I saw Zach Braff – of Scrubs and Garden State fame – on E’s “The Daily 10” last night, lamenting this very fact, and mourning the loss of his home state’s reputation.

Now, I don’t know much about Jersey to begin with, but, if there were a handful of  shows on TV right now making Pittsburgh “trendy” for ALL THE WRONG REASONS, wouldn’t you all be upset?  I kind of feel bad for Jerseyites.

As Braff put it, one can’t exactly say that they spent a lovely weekend at the Jersey Shore without some GTL, Snooki, or fist-pumping reference.  (Though, could you say that before the MTV show? I don’t know. As I said, I know nothing about NJ. This isn’t my being rude, it is just unfamiliar territory for me.)

I mean, are ALL housewives in NJ table-flipping, hair-extension pulling, faux-drag drama queens like the ladies that I love to hate love…on the Real Housewives of New Jersey?

Of course not!

My question, though, is why do they all like spray tans so much? And the makeup? I mean TONS and TONS of makeup? Overkill of animal prints? Big hair? (Hello, Tracy, Olivia, Gatsby Salon staff! You certainly ARE Jerseylicious!) And the TEMPERS! Cat-fights left and right, girls hitting guys, guys hitting girls, table flipping, etc. etc….This CAN’T be all of Jersey.  (Just like all of Pittsburgh isn’t mullets………..)

I DO realize that they’re putting these people on TV for ratings. (And for that, I am thankful!) I’m on the side of people that reside in Jersey who have actual class and taste.

I mean, trust me, Pennsylvania gets a bad rap sometimes, too. Have you SEEN the “Pennsylvania Boys” video spoof of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls?”  Cut me a BREAK. Hello, embarrassing.

So, I want to hear from the normal people from Dirty Jersey  the lovely Garden State because as much as I love these people and these shows (and trust me, I do – my DVR doesn’t lie!) I feel as though the real New Jersey needs to stand up for itself!

Here’s a hug from Pittsburgh.

(And a fist pump for good measure.)

“The Hills” Series Finale: The End of a Not-So-Reality TV Era

14 Jul

Watching The Hills come to a final end was bittersweet. I didn’t know that I liked it as much as I did until I knew that it was over for good – at which point, I actually felt sad. It felt like saying goodbye to an old friend; albeit, a friend that I knew I had outgrown, and, a friend that I knew I was better off without, but, still, sad in the sense that I was saying goodbye to a friend nonetheless. It was symbolic in a sense, as they were closing a younger and more carefree chapter of their lives, so am I and many of my friends, too, as we all move on to pursue other things.

That being said, I thought that the ending was genius….well, as genius as The Hills could get. For a show so superficial and shallow, it was a perfect, simple, and clever ending, that left us all wondering, pondering, and still wanting more.

Aha! I KNEW it was all fake …

But wait, was it? Are they mocking us? How much of it was fake? Are we supposed to just interpret this how we see fit? What was reality and what was fake? Was it all on a sound stage? What was scripted and what was not? How much of it was their real lives? What about what Brody said in the after show? How DO him and Kristen really feel about one another? Were they all acting the whole time?

We may never know.

Just as we have not ever really known up until this point.

So the sound stage/studio ending was so poignant and so well-played, that I have to give MTV major props (pardon the pun) for that one.

What are your thoughts? And were you saddened to say goodbye to The Hills?

PS: Do you think that Kristen Cavillari’s new life in Europe will result in a spinoff show?

Thoughts?

THE BACHELOR BREAKUP: Jake and Vienna … my personal thoughts…

27 Jun

I’m usually not all Perez-Hilton mean in my blog but I can’t help it with this one …..WHO CARES?!!?!??  She was a skank who looked like a cross-eyed tranny horse.

The show is among the fakest out there (save for most things on MTV and VH1) and anyone who goes on it or The Bachelorette has no concept of what real love is, nor a chance of finding it. (Trista and Ryan may be an exception.)  This girl was, from what I gather just from reading magazines, watching TV, and having ears and eyes, a piece of fame-seeking, white trash with a not-so-shocking, love ’em and leave ’em party-girl past. And Jake? Um, Douchebag. (Please note the capital D.) There you have it – Glitzburgh’s take on the least-shocking, least-important breakup of the moment. Why did I invest 60 seconds of my time and a couple inches of my blog space in writing this, again??

PS: YUP, I’m ready for the “haterade” … bring on the nasty comments! The beauty of creating, maintaining, and writing your own blog, is that you can write whatever you please, and spread your own opinions across the web like wildfire! So, bring it on. Most people whoI talk to tend to agree with me, anyway…We all have our guilty pleasures, I watch some crap TV, too. Unfortunately, I’ve just had my fill of The Bachelor series, even WITHOUT EVER WATCHING IT, and I am annoyed that every one of these couples’ breakups or Bachelor/Bachelorette scandals is “news”. I mean, WHAT?!?? It *WASN’T* TRUE LOVE? OMG!!!!!!!!! What is the world coming to?!???

Cut me a break. The show has been on forever. Isn’t it time to call it quits? The gimmicks get worse each season. I don’t even WATCH it but the clips they show on other entertainment shows, the previews/commercials, and the things that I read in magazines, are enough to make me throw up in my mouth a little. I’ve just had enough of it…and this particular couple gets on my nerves beyond belief. When he was on Dancing with the Stars I wanted to throw things at the TV. Hell, I wanted to throw TVs at the TV!

The show makes a mockery of romance, relationships, courtship, and marriage. It’s rather sickening and pathetic. No wonder women in our country have a warped perception of relationships and marrige. (Just a little food for thought.)

What IS the Price of Beauty?

20 Apr

Have any of you seen the show “Price of Beauty” with Jessica Simpson?

I must say that I really enjoy it.

I always love learning about the everyday social norms of other cultures, and it is really interesting to see what other cultures traditionally consider beautiful. I’m always open-minded and try not to judge, and I am fully aware that I shouldn’t base my concepts of what is beautiful on a magazine cover.

However, being a young woman in the United States, it is very difficult not to do so.

It is refreshing to journey to other countries with Jessica Simpson and company, and to see other cultures’ perceptions of what is beautiful vs. what is not – both inside and out, and to explore both current and historical beauty regimens.

In one country in Africa, the bigger you are, the more beautiful you are. “Fat” is not a derogatory word. “Skinny” women are frowned upon. In Japan, the eyes that many consider beautiful and exotic are a burden for some of the women there, who have cosmetic surgery to have their eyes made to appear more rounded and bigger, like a “doll.” Also in Japan, there are two very different cultures of women: the Harajuku girls who are very modern and whimsical in their clothing choices, and then also the very ultra-traditional Geisha, and everything in-between. In a Middle-Eastern country, Jessica gets scolded for showing too much leg, as the woman doing the scolding was showing quite a bit of cleavage. But who are we to judge? To each his (or her) own.

One common theme throughout the show is not about the rituals (some of which are crazy – fish that eat fungi off of your feet, laying buried in sand for 2 hours, mud baths, grape jacuzzis, and more) – but a theme of finding inner peace, loving yourself, and thus, radiating beautiful from the inside out.

The concept of this show could become cliche and contrived. However, as corny as it gets at times, Jessica and her friends give it the perfect dose of comedy and humor mixed with an honest vulnerability and a true desire to learn what, exactly, true beauty really is.

I love it, and I think that Jessica has become stronger because of it. Let’s face it – the girl has been a target of tabloids and “fans” alike. I think she’s great and I applaud her! (read my recent blog about Jessica’s recent “no-makeup” Marie Claire shoot, here.)

Project Runway: Bye Bye (for real this time) Anthony!

10 Apr

First off: ANTHONY, I LOVE YOU!

I am so bummed that Anthony Williams is gone….for real this time!

For those of you who do not watch Project Runway regularly, Anthony was booted, but since Maya left voluntarily, he was allowed back in to the competition.

I personally think that he deserved to make it to Bryant Park more than Jay (sorry to say it!)

What do you all think? To me, Anthony’s personality shone through in his designs, and, his portfolio was gorgeous! He designed dresses to make a woman feel like a lady – and look sexy and sophisticated at the same time.

Jay always fumbles and seems lost! He has these awesome pieces that still are somehow lacking!

So, since I am obviously not a Jay fan, and Anthony is gone, I’m now rooting for my other favorite, Seth Aaron…but I’d take Emilio over Mila any day!

Psssst…I stumbled across this GREAT Project Runway blog ~ check it out:

Idol Adieu – Bye Bye, Benami & One Close Call for ‘Big Mike!’

8 Apr

The American Idol eliminations the past two weeks have been quite interesting. Didi Benami last week surprised me, Big Mike (a.k.a. Michael Lynch) this week, absolutely shocked me! He was the contestant with the lowest scores – and was in danger of being sent home – until the judges unanimously decided to use their ‘save’ on him.

Didi was one of my personal favorites, and so I was sad to see her go. Mike, however, is a definite favorite of the judges, and, many fans…..but, I guess his performance Tuesday  night on the Lennon/McCartney themed show was not enough to rally his voters or create any new fans for himself.

I wish Didi the best of luck, but, it was only a matter of time. I‘m picking Crystal to win it all, but, I’m ROOTING for Lee Dewyze, *my* personal favorite!

Who are you all rooting for?

And were you all as absolutely surprised as me to see Big Mike nearly eliminated last night?

Do you think the judges made the right call using their only “save” on him?

I don’t know that it was the right move; but, I definitely “called it” that he’d be the one they’d save….so that part of it did not surprise me!  I want to hear all of your opinions!

Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Kim Zolciak Comes Out…

28 Mar

Yes, while I read classic literature, I also watch some trash television which I consider “guilty pleasure” TV … and one of these shows just happens to be the “Real Housewives” series.

The Atlanta cast was full of fun, feuds, and fierce feistiness (how’s THAT for some nice alliteration?!?)

One of the most controversial – and one of my favorite – cast members was Kim Zolciak. (Who recently said cheating hubby Jesse James should be “castrated” by wife Sandra Bullock! LoL)

Aspiring recording artist and former model Kim, known for her wigs, lavish lifestyle, and mysterious fiancee, “Big Poppa” always had some sort of drama going on her life. (But, then again, which Real Housewives cast member doesn’t?)

Whether it was her breakdown on the reunion show over losing her hair (was she, or was she not sick?!?) to her knock-down drag out fights with NeNe and Sheree among others, there was always something irritating someone about this blonde bombshell.

Akin to “Speidi” with her ploys for attention, she has now become a tabloid – and a fan – favorite.

However, she’ll now be reaching out to an even more diverse audience: not only did Zolciak pose (topless!) in the famous NOH8 campaign in a show of support for gay marriage rights; but in this week’s issue of Life & Style Magazine, Kim Zolciak came out, announcing that she is, in fact, bisexual. During the recording process of her hit dance single, “Tardy for the Party”, she fell in love with one of the producers…who happened to be a female DJ named Tracy Young.

Kim has a healthy view on her sexuality and believes that “love has no gender” and she won’t let neither a woman nor a man define her. Her relationship with Tracy lasted several months and now her and “Big Poppa” (who has finally been revealed as still-not-legally-divorced businessman Lee Najjar) are back on. While both Poppa and Kim were surprised at how her romantic life during her break from him unfolded, Kim loves Tracy as a person and does not regret the loving and caring relationship that they shared.

Kim calls claims that she had the relationship for “publicity” reasons  “absolutely disgusting” and said it was about the relationship and the companionship.

Zociak isn’t the only famous female who has announced that she is bisexual. Will and Grace actress Megan Mullally came out in The Advocate and thinks that “everyone is innately bisexual.” Famously, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie, and Anne Heche have been in high-profile relationships with both men and women, and relative newcomers Megan Fox and Lady GaGa have also admitted to being attracted to both men and women.
