Pittsburgh is Going to the Dogs this Weekend! ~ Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association Dog Show … and my Furry Friends <3

26 Mar

Make no bones about it, Pittsburgh’s going to the dogs this weekend! (And yes, I’m going to cram every canine cliche into this piece as possible. Watch me.)

The Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association is hosting its annual Dog Show, which includes Dog Fair, Dog Show, Membership Meeting, and Awards Ceremony, at the Pittsburgh David L. Lawrence Convention Center on March 27th and 28th, 2010.

I would “woof” (translation: love) to go, but since I cannot, my pups and I are quite bummed. I am a true doggie-lover and have always wanted to attend a dog show. My two canine companions are LucyLoo Pugbum, a 6-year-old Pug and Brussels Griffon Mix, and Miss Maggie May, a 2-year-old purebred Pug. (I also have two Parakeets, Gus and Gaga, who I call my tweethearts, but whom my boyfriend lovingly refers to as “decorations that make a mess.” That’s neither here nor there, but worthwhile to share, I think.)

Anyway … The WPKC show is open to the public and would be a great family event, or a fabulous day/weekend excursion for any dog or animal lover! Here’s the details that I’ve pulled from their website, http://www.wpka-inc.org

  • Dog  Show is open to the public.  The admission fee is $9.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 4 years to 12 years.
  • Doors open at 7:00am and conformation judging begins at 9:00am.  Best in Show is judged at approximately 5:00pm.
  • Obedience trials are judged at the same time as conformation each day.
  • The show on Saturday, March 27 is a complete dog show resulting in a Best in Show award.  The show on Sunday, March 28, is also a separate and complete dog show, which includes the same dogs as those entered on Saturday for the most part.  However, a different judge on Sunday judges each breed.
  • The judging times for each breed on Saturday and Sunday will be available on our websitewpka-inc.org any time after Monday, March 22, 2009.

FYI, I do not want to “bark up the wrong tree” or “ruffle anyone’s feathers” (yes! 2 points! dog AND bird analogy. Way to tie it all together, Ash!) by promoting a rival event, but if you live in the Slippery Rock area, there is also a Going to the Dogs Beef and Bones Fundraiser Dinner on March 27th that I mentioned in a blog post yesterday. Additionally, this weekend and next week there will be “Dog Pictures with the Easter Bunny” all around the Pittsburgh area. Call around to local pet stores, indoor dog parks, groomers, shelters, and photographers, or search the web for info!

My pups attended a Pug and Small Dog Meet-Up “Spring Fling Party” at K-9 Kingdom in Wexford this past Sunday. It was for pugs and pug mixes and they had a blast. So, even though I can’t make the Dog Show in Pittsburgh this weekend, I still got my doggie fix for the week.

If anyone goes to the WPKC Dog Show, PLEASE post photos and share comments about it – I’d PAWSitively love to hear how it goes!

I’ll leave you with a couple of photos of my dogs. Lucy is the pug mix, Maggie is the pug. (No more corny animal puns, I promise.)

PS: Just for fun … If you have a “mixed breed” (or, if it is PC to say, a “mutt) there are a couple of neat things available right now:

Pedigree is promoting a MUTT CENSUS – info here. http://www.muttcensus.com/

Also, here is a Dog Genealogy Kit that you can order to find out the true heritage of your furry friend: http://www.wisdompanel.com/
